What is Nia ?
Nia is a way to condition the body and support healing and self-expression through movement and sensation. Developed more than twenty five years ago by Debbie and Carlos Rosas, Nia is a dynamic practice that blends aspects of three movement traditions integrating each into a joyful exploration of movement and music.
Nia embodies the philosophy Through Movement We Find Health. It recognizes that bodies are designed to move, and that movement can be pleasurable!
The three movement traditions and nine forms of Nia are:
| Martial Arts: |
T’ai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido |
| Dance Arts: |
Jazz Dance, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance |
| Healing Arts: |
Yoga, Alexander Technique, The Teachings of M. Feldenkrais® |
Nia supports each individual to move at the intensity level that is right for him or her. A variety of speeds, styles, and ranges of motion are included to support each student’s practice. Nia philosophy is based on the Pleasure Principle: If it feels good, keep doing it; if it doesn’t feel good, stop and adapt what you do to feel better.
The Art and Science of Nia
Nia is based on The Body’s Way. This means that we respect the body’s natural design as the primary guide to improving function. Combining technical precision and free-form expression, Nia focuses on conditioning the body and the nervous system by developing and working with the body’s five main sensations: flexibility, strength, mobility, agility and stability. By tuning-in to The Body’s Way, we move in harmony, leading to a general state of what Nia calls Dynamic Ease.
Who takes Nia?
