Program Information

The Centerpoint Network MBSR Program follows the model developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and his colleagues, at the University of Massachusetts Medical School Center for Mindfulness. For the past 30 years, MBSR has been helping people to cope better with concerns as diverse as chronic pain, headache, work stress, chronic illness, sleeplessness, fatigue, relationship stress, and life transitions. MBSR offers reliable, practical methods to become more resilient to stress, accept change with more ease, and move toward greater peace of mind.

MBSR is an eight-week class that teaches several mindfulness meditation and awareness practices. The class meets once a week for two hours and for one day-long class retreat. Course participants learn the following mindfulness practices:

Body Scan meditation        Mindful breathing

Gentle yoga stretches       Sitting meditation

Walking meditation          Informal awareness practices

During class sessions participants have the opportunity to learn, practice and discuss the methods presented. All of the practices are adaptable to suit a wide range of mobility and individual needs. Participants are provided with all course materials including handouts and easy-to-follow CDs to help build a strong foundation of practice between sessions.

Our classes take place in a comfortable and supportive environment that balances structure and flexibility. The mindfulness practices taught in class will include periods of sitting on a chair or cushion, lying down and slow walking, as well as slow, gentle yoga stretches. People can participate in MBSR classes with a wide variety of physical conditions and limitations. We encourage participants to adjust practice postures or positions whenever necessary, and we will work with you to adapt any of the practices as needed. We provide chairs, yoga mats, cushions, and blankets for use during class sessions. Of course, you are also welcome to bring your own props or cushions to provide optimal support for your practice.

Please note: MBSR is not psychotherapy and is not a substitute for counseling, mental health care, medical care, or substance abuse treatment.
