Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction or MBSR teaches practical meditation, movement and awareness practices to help individuals transform the way they cope with life stress, chronic pain, and illness. It is one of the most widely researched and supported ways to actively engage in improving health and wellbeing.
MBSR was developed in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, while he was a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
That program became what is now the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Healthcare and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where it has served thousands of participants over the last thirty years. Since then, the understanding of the mind/body connection in promoting health and wellness has been demonstrated in numerous research studies across health disciplines.
MBSR is more than a set of techniques to reduce stress. It may be better described as an approach to living; a way of meeting the ebb and flow of life’s changes with more equanimity and less suffering. It provides an active way of working with the challenges of daily life, inviting us to engage deeply with our own experience. MBSR offers many pathways into the spaciousness of each moment, from which new possibilities for ease and acceptance can arise.
